Weehawken, NJ Real Estate Guide: Buy, Sell & Rent

October 17, 2026•6 min read

Weehawken is a Hudson County township on the Hudson River, directly across from Midtown Manhattan. Its population reached 17,197 in the 2020 Census, up about 37 percent from 2010, and most of that growth came from new building along the waterfront. Weehawken sits partly on top of the Palisades and partly at the foot of the cliffs, so you'll find new condos and rental buildings by the river and older housing up on the bluff. It's also where the Lincoln Tunnel comes out on the New Jersey side. Here's what to know before you buy, sell, rent or invest in Weehawken.

Why People Choose Weehawken

The main draw is how close Manhattan is. A ferry, light rail and several bus routes all start within the township, and drivers have the Lincoln Tunnel right there.

Weehawken also has the views. Boulevard East runs along the top of the Palisades and looks out over the Hudson River and the Manhattan skyline. Down by the water, the waterfront has been redeveloped since the 1990s with homes, offices, parks and transit, and a public riverfront walkway connects it to the neighboring towns.

The township also has some real history. The Weehawken Dueling Grounds, where Aaron Burr fatally shot Alexander Hamilton in 1804, are just below the cliffs.

Getting Around: Commuting from Weehawken

  • Ferry: NY Waterway's Port Imperial terminal has ferries to Midtown at West 39th Street, Pier 11/Wall Street and Brookfield Place in Lower Manhattan. The Lincoln Harbor terminal runs ferries to West 39th Street.
  • Light rail: NJ Transit's Hudson-Bergen Light Rail stops at Lincoln Harbor and Port Imperial stations. Trains run north toward Union City and North Bergen and south through Hoboken, Jersey City and Bayonne. At Hoboken Terminal you can transfer to PATH, NJ Transit trains and other ferries.
  • Bus: Several NJ Transit routes run to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown, and others go to Hoboken Terminal and Journal Square. Buses run along Park Avenue, Boulevard East and Port Imperial Boulevard.
  • Car: The Lincoln Tunnel leads into Midtown, and Route 495 connects the tunnel to the New Jersey Turnpike. The Lincoln Tunnel Helix carries traffic between the toll plaza and the top of the Palisades.

Neighborhoods and Housing Types

Weehawken is a small township, but its sections at the river and on the bluff offer very different housing:

  • Port Imperial: A planned waterfront community along the river, home to the NY Waterway terminal. Its housing is mostly newer condominium and rental buildings, many with skyline views and building amenities.
  • Lincoln Harbor: A waterfront business district between the Lincoln Tunnel and Weehawken Cove that also has newer rental and condo buildings. It has its own light rail station and ferry stop.
  • Uptown and Kingswood Bluff: On top of the Palisades, uptown includes Kingswood Bluff, known as "The Bluff." Its housing is older and largely predates the waterfront buildings.
  • The Heights and Downtown: The Heights is on the upper level of town, around the old Weehawken reservoir. Downtown, known locally as "The Shades," sits below the cliffs. Both have older homes, multi-family buildings and apartments.

Buying a Home in Weehawken

Most Weehawken buyers are choosing between a waterfront condo and an older home uptown or in the Heights. Condos usually mean elevator living, amenities and parking arrangements set by the building. If you're buying with an FHA loan, a two-to-four family property can be bought with a low down payment as long as you live in one of the units.

A few things we help buyers check:

  • Condo association finances: Monthly fees, reserves, what the fees cover, and any planned special assessments.
  • Parking: Parking is a real factor in a town this close to Manhattan. We confirm whether a home comes with a deeded or assigned space, garage access or on-street parking only.
  • Older-home inspections: Homes on the bluff and in the Heights can have older roofs, wiring and plumbing. A thorough inspection is worth it.
  • Property taxes: Taxes are a big part of any New Jersey budget. We pull the current tax figure for each property you're considering.

We can also connect you with a lender for pre-approval before you start touring.

Selling Your Weehawken Home

Weehawken buyers often weigh it against Hoboken, Jersey City, Edgewater and Manhattan itself. That means your listing has to show off what sets it apart, whether that's a skyline view, a short walk to the ferry or light rail, parking, or extra space in an uptown home. A Port Imperial condo and an uptown house sell to different buyers and should be priced against different sales. We'll prepare a free comparative market analysis using recent sales of homes like yours, then market your home through the MLS and every major online channel.

Renting and Investing in Weehawken

Renters here can choose between full-service waterfront buildings near the ferry and light rail and apartments in older buildings uptown and in the Heights. We help renters find units that fit their budget and commute, and we help landlords price, market and screen tenants.

For investors, the main options are condos, which come with association rules on leasing, and the older multi-family buildings away from the river. Before you buy, we'll go over realistic rents, taxes, insurance, association rules and the building's condition so the numbers work from the start.
