Maywood, NJ Real Estate Guide for Buyers, Sellers & Renters
Maywood is a compact Bergen County borough of about 1.3 square miles, home to 10,080 residents as of the 2020 Census. It sits between Hackensack, Paramus, Rochelle Park and Lodi, with Route 17 running through town and a walkable shopping district along West Pleasant Avenue. Maywood owes its name, and much of its early growth, to the railroad. If you're thinking about buying, selling, renting or investing here, this guide covers the basics.
Why People Choose Maywood
Location is the big draw. Maywood is small enough to get across in a few minutes, yet it touches some of the busiest commercial corridors in North Jersey. Route 17 cuts through the borough, Route 4 and Interstate 80 are a short drive away through neighboring towns, and the Garden State Parkway is close by. Part of Bergen Town Center, the shopping center at Route 4 and Forest Avenue, actually crosses the border into Maywood, and the Lowe's across Forest Avenue sits on the Maywood side.
The borough also has a real sense of history. In 1872 the New Jersey Midland Railway finished a station on Maywood Avenue. The railroad wanted to call it "West Hackensack," but locals persuaded it to use "Maywood," the name the area already went by. Seven hundred lots near the tracks were auctioned that same year, and the community went on to incorporate as a borough in 1894.
Getting Around: Commuting from Maywood
- Bus to Manhattan: NJ Transit routes 144, 145, 148, 162, 163 and 164 serve the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown, and route 175 runs to the George Washington Bridge Bus Station.
- Local bus: Routes 712, 751, 752, 753, 755, 758 and 770 connect Maywood with nearby Bergen County towns.
- Train: Maywood's own passenger rail service ended in 1966, but NJ Transit's Pascack Valley Line stops at Essex Street and Anderson Street stations in neighboring Hackensack. The line runs to Hoboken Terminal, with a stop at Secaucus Junction for transfers to other NJ Transit lines.
- Car: Route 17 runs through the borough. Maywood Avenue, Central Avenue, Passaic Street and Spring Valley Road are the main local roads, and Route 4, I-80 and the Garden State Parkway are reachable through nearby towns.
Housing in Maywood
Maywood had about 3,800 housing units at the 2020 Census, which is a small market by Bergen County standards. With fewer homes, fewer come up for sale at any one time. Buyers who are ready to act when the right property lists usually come out ahead. Depending on what's available, your search may include single-family homes, multi-family properties and apartments. We'll tell you what's active and what's coming soon, so you aren't relying on whatever happens to show up online.
The central business district runs along West Pleasant Avenue from Maywood Avenue to Lincoln Avenue, where most of the borough's restaurants and shops are. A Streetscapes grant paid for new sidewalks, street work and lighting along the corridor.
Buying a Home in Maywood
A few things we help Maywood buyers check before they make an offer:
- Older-home inspections: Maywood has been developing since the 1870s, so some homes have older systems. A full inspection covering the roof, heating, plumbing, electrical and any oil tank history is worth the cost.
- FHA and multi-family: If a two-to-four family home comes up and you're using an FHA loan, you can buy with a low down payment as long as you live in one of the units. Rent from the other units can help with the mortgage.
- Environmental history: The former Maywood Chemical Works is a federal Superfund site. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers runs the FUSRAP cleanup, which covers properties in Maywood, Lodi and Rochelle Park. We help buyers find the public records and disclosures for any property they're serious about.
- Property taxes: Taxes are a major part of any New Jersey budget. We pull the current tax figure for every home you're considering.

Selling Your Maywood Home
Because few Maywood homes are on the market at once, a well-prepared listing can stand out. Maywood is next to Hackensack, Paramus and Route 17, so your buyer pool goes beyond people already searching in the borough. Commuters who use the Manhattan buses and buyers priced out of nearby towns are both worth reaching. We'll prepare a free comparative market analysis based on recent sales of homes like yours, then market your property across the MLS and every major online channel.
Renting and Investing in Maywood
Maywood's bus service to Manhattan, its spot on Route 17 and its closeness to Hackensack's hospital and county offices all bring in renters who want easy access to work. For landlords, we help price, market and screen tenants. For investors, we'll go through realistic rents, taxes, insurance and the property's condition before you buy, so the numbers work from day one.
